Post jam updates and the future!


Hi all! “A WORLD A/PART: FROM MAN” was our most demanding project so far, and for this very reason it came out in a pretty messy condition, but given the circumstances of the development cycle, we are proud that it has seen the light of the day.

Yes, we made mistakes during the development process. We knew about some of them, and other problems were pointed out by you, the people who played and rated our game. We’re very grateful for that, really, because getting feedback was our main reason to take part in MvM. With that being said, we’re not gonna stop the development in the current state of this project.

After the jam’s rating stage started, we worked hard to fix and tune up existing mechanics. We’ve also added some new content.

Post-jam Update

Fixes:

  • Improved player movement, especially its precision and speed.
  • Removed player jump slow-down.
  • Fixed the issue where locked doors could be opened without the right key, which caused soft-locks for many players.
  • Improved boomerang ability hitboxes on special walls.
  • Wall jump redesign - player turns towards the wall and snaps to it, movement input changes the jump direction.
  • Map redesign, which includes raised ceilings, some enlarged rooms, more space for the camera, bigger platforms and safety nets in certain places.

New content:

  • Variable jump - control your jump height by pressing the jump button longer.
  • Player character and enemies have hurt animations and damage indicators now, such as blood particles and decals.
  • Prisoner behavior redesign - faster, stronger and deadlier.
  • Dog behavior redesign - distances itself from the target after attacking, won’t bark indefinitely when the player is out of reach/far away.
  • Added triggers that change camera view to help you navigate through some wall jump segments.
  • Added walking camera bobbing scale.
  • Added mask altar.
  • Added collectible skulls counter.
  • Added a reward for collecting all skulls.

The Future

All of the improvements listed above conclude the last major update for our “jam build”, but as we’ve said earlier, it doesn’t mean that the development has ended.

We want to bring this project to the originally established scope.

Here’s the scope of planned content:

  • Chaos Temple level and artstyle redesign - it’s about to double (at least) in size and be more edgy than it already is.
  • Two additional Temples and one central hub.
  • More abilities to find in the Temples.
  • More enemy types and demanding boss fights.
  • Combat overhaul - new animations and features.
  • Expanded storyline - talking characters and scripted events.

The next update is expected to drop in May and will include the Chaos Temple redesign, which we started a week ago.

Replayed through it all and I gotta say, movement feels much, much better now! The only thing that could be improved further is wall jumping: since it now requires you to “move” away from the wall to be able to jump, depending on the camera angle it can be very tricky to perform and I often found myself dropping from the wall instead of jumping.

Apart from that, it’s great that you took all feedback to heart and I’m looking forward to the content update!
